6 - Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices

Reflection

This lesson was created to make the test methods curriculum more familiar with the students. Popular song lyrics which I knew had a good rhythm and a positive message were formatted as a comprehension passage so the students could read the lyrics and answer comprehension questions. The lesson was spread out two days, each day a different song. The first day was very successful because it was a fairly recent hip-hop track that most students were familiar with titled "I Can". We read the lyrics while we followed the music from the original track. Some students even sung it out loud. I learned that the students enjoyed the music and were able to employ comprehension skills they have learned to answer these questions. I made up the questions so that students would have to read the lyrics in order to get the answer.

This lesson was very successful and simple to make up. All that was needed was a popular song with a positive message, the lyrics to that song (easily obtainable through the internet), and questions that exercise different comprehension strategies. I have already begun to make up a considerable library of positive songs for this lesson that teaches good test taking skills in an interesting way.
