Artifact 1- Program Description

Carroll County High School Building Trades Program Description:

  • Carroll County High School Building Trades Program is a 3-year, dual credit program consisting of 10th through 12th grade students.
  • Two instructors offer quality training in three course levels.
  • Building Trades I-A is a dual credit introductory course covering the four disciplines.
  • Building Trades I-B is the dual credit credentialing course that offers to successful students a verified credit in the NCCER Core.
  • Building Trades II-A, B, C is a dual credit program offering live work training in the four disciplines: Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, and Carpentry. 
  • Instructors encourage students to choose a career path.  
  • Students are involved in projects such as layout and design, material list, pricing, and project time-line completion.
  • Workplace readiness skills are expected as well as good work habits and social skills.
  • Building Trades III is a dual credit program with rigorous in-depth study of a specific discipline while working as an apprentice with instructors and contractors.
  • Building Trades III students are in the final phase of completing their high school and college diplomas.
  • Students with verified work experience in their discipline area are prepared to take the Contractors Exam and the Tradesman Journeyman exam for their specific discipline.

Carroll County High School Building Trades Program's Goals and Objectives:

Building Trades I-a

  • Students complete a rigorous OSHA 10-hour training course in construction safety highlighting the focus four hazards (falls, struck by, caught in between, and electrical).
  • Students complete training requirements and documentation on the safe use of our shop and trade hand and power tools.
  • Students are introduced to the four major disciplines involved in residential and light commercial construction (Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing , and  Masonry).
  • Students use live work, training stations, and the labs to receive hands-on experience in Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing and Masonry. 
  • Instructors use hands-on work to instill in students the importance of punctuality, honesty, opened-mindedness, willingness, and work ethics that represent a quality employee.

Building Trades I-b 

  • Students that do not have an OSHA 10-hour certification are required to purchase Career Safe online 10-hour OSHA certification for construction.
  • Program uses NCCER Core Curriculum to teach students Safety, Introduction to Construction Math, Hand tools, Power Tools, and Introduction to Construction Drawings.
  • Students are prepared to take the NCCER Core online credentialing Exam for Verified Credit.

Building Trades II-a, b, c 

  • Students complete safety training on all hand and power tools.  
  • Students identify their career path as lifelong learners in one or more of the disciplines (Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing , and  Masonry).
  • Students are trained in residential construction on real projects in the building trades shop, around campus, and in the community. 
  • Students utilize dual credit courses and work experiences to work towards contractors licensure and tradesman certification.
  • Students' performance is monitored closely and evaluated on workplace readiness, skill, and trade skills.

Building Trades III

  • Students continue with the objectives of Building Trades I & II through actual construction projects at CCHS or in the community.
  • Training simulates the expectations of employers and the workplace environment. 
  • Students demonstrate problem solving and leadership skills while working on secondary and post secondary levels.
  • Students are evaluated on performance as employees, and expectations and standards are constantly monitored.
  • Students complete course requirements for their Diploma in Construction Technology at Wytheville Community College.
