Artifact 66 - Describe Green-oriented CTSO Community Service Project or Classroom Projects

The Carroll County High School Building Trades program has been incorporating a green-oriented awareness into the classroom in the following ways:

  • Participate in a school-wide recycling effort through utilizing collection bins in the classroom
  • Constructed two photo voltaic panels from individual cells
  • Constructed a passive solar panel - liquid circulation or forced air
  • Constructed a solar oven (for food)
  • Work with metal construction framing and discuss the environmental impacts and advantages  -  focusing on waste disposal, carbon footprint considerations, and the ability to recycle products at the structure's end-life
  • Convey an understanding that green means more than free energy  - it is the complete environmental impact
  • Application was made for a grant to fund the research of a new product (see attached)

Artifact 67 - List of Green Competencies that Could Enhance Curriculum

Green Competencies:

  • Understand LEED, the components and certification levels
  • Define and understand the term carbon footprint
  • Identify the environmental impact of chemicals and products used in the construction industry
  • Understand the green advantages of using metal framing and construction materials
  • Understand the impact of the sun's changing azimuth and elevation
  • Understand the effect of structure overhang lengths related to interior climate
  • Understand the term and usage of photo voltaic cells and solar panels
  • Understand the term passive energy
  • Understand the environmental impact of buying and using local products (not the local economic impact)
  • Identify simple life-style changes and job-site attitudes/practices that can have a positive impact on the environment
  • Understand the environmental impact of parking lots, drainage, and run-off
  • Investigate unique green building methods and materials (i.e. houses made of hay bales, plastic bottles, Styrofoam, or built underground)
