Learning Goal #1: TLW compare and order whole numbers using symbols and models.
Standard: LA Math Grade 3: Number and Number Relations: GLE 2. Read, write, compare, and order whole numbers through 9999 using symbols (i.e., <, =, >) and models (N-1-E) (N-3-E).
Learning Goal #2: TLW use place value understanding to round to the nearest 10 or 100.
Standard: 3.NBT.1. Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Learning Goal #3: TLW add numbers of 3 digits or less.
Standard: LA Math Grade 3: Number and Number Relations: GLE 11. Add and subtract numbers of 3 digits or less (N-6-E) (N-7-E).
For this unit on Number and Number Relations in third grade math, students need an understanding of place value in order to work with multi-digit numbers. Students will demonstrate mastery through comparing, ordering and rounding numbers with two or more digits. In addition, they will be able to add numbers with two or more digits.
The first Learning Goal and Objectives 1.1 and 1.2 are aligned to my unit of instruction through teaching students how to compare whole numbers using symbols and models, such as place value blocks. Prior knowledge will be activated through review of place value, which has already been covered at the beginning of the third grade school year.
The second learning goal and Objectives 2.1 and 2.2 are aligned to my unit of instruction through teaching students how to order whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. In these lessons, students will build upon the previously acquired skill of comparing whole numbers as they learn how to order whole numbers (e.g. using a number line).
The third learning goal and Objectives 3.1 continues to develop students’ acquisition of place value understanding, as students learn how to add numbers with two or more digits.
Each learning goal builds upon the previous one, as do the objectives as well. Each objective and learning goal is created like bricks stacking one after another to create a foundational understanding of number and operations in base ten.
