Rationale for NETS-T and DPI standards for iMovie Activity

Context

In my Media and Technology class during Block II, my classmates (Allison Crisawn, Lori Dillard, Erica Testerman and Kate Breeden)and I created a movie based on a story book.  This movie may be shown to students in grades K-6.

We used a digital video camera to make the movie and then we uploaded it onto the iMovie program on a Macintosh computer.  We did this using a fire wire.  We then used the iMovie program to add music and sound effects and to edit the video. We will download our movie onto a DVD for easier viewing purposes.

Impact

After making this movie, I have learned how to use a digital video camera to make a movie and then upload in order to edit it. I will be able to use this as a teacher to implement technology and drama into my classroom. With my knowledge I will be able to help my students make their own movies. This project may be used within any subject area.

My goal for this project is to allow my students to have fun while learning how to use a digital video camera to make a movie.

Alignment

I have met competency IA because by making this movie I have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and concepts related to the technology I used, including a digital video camera and a computer with the iMovie program.

I have met competency IB because I used a high-tech digital video camera and a technological program, iMovie, to create and edit my video.

I have met IIA because when making this video it allows students with disabilities to be able to enjoy it as well. For example, a deaf student would be able to see the story being acted out and a blind student would be able to hear it. To adapt it for an ESL student we could have the words translated into their language and put on the bottom while the movie is playing.

I have met IID because now that I have the knowledge of how to make a movie I can use it to plan my lessons and incorporate it into my lessons. I could use a movie I have made or have the students make one of their own.

I have met IIE because with my knowledge of using the digital video camera and the iMovie program I am able to see and stay current with the technological advances being made and I will be able to help my students learn them as well.

I have met VA because now that I know how to make a movie and use the iMovie program I am able to use this technology resource in other activities and lessons I may participate in, allowing me professional development and lifelong learning.

I have met VD because by making this video with my peers, we were able to collaborate together to get it accomplished and will be able to use it to communicate with our other peers and also possibly the parents of our students.

I have met DPI standard 6, indicator 1 because by using drama, music and art to successfully make our movie, I was able to understand the basic techniques, vocabularies, materials and thinking processes in the arts discipline.

I have met DPI standard 12 because by working with my peers we were able to create a movie which will allow us to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.
