Context

This assignment was completed during Block II under the advisement of Jeff Goodman.  Together as a class, we created a safety survey to take to our school of internship, Mountain View Elementary, in Ashe County, NC.  We will use the survey to see what our teachers and the school are doing to keep the students and themselves safe. I completed my survey in Ms. Treadway's sixth grade classroom.

Impact

By doing this survey, I have learned how to prepare better for when I become a teacher.  I am aware of the safety precautions I need to take in order to keep my students safe, especially during science activities.  This survey allowed me to locate things I may need to use while I am in my internship.

Alignment

I have met Standard 17, indicator 1, because by completing this survey I am now aware of the safety issues I need to take in my own classroom when I begin teaching. I know that I need to provide supervision during all science lab activities to ensure safety of the students.

I have met Standard 17, indicator 2, because I know I must research and have knowledge of all of the materials and/or chemicals my students my come into contact with. This will ensure the proper handling of these materials and thus ensure the safety of my students.

I have met Standard 17, indicator 3, because I have shown that I am aware of the Safety Laws, Codes, and Standards and I know I must be familiar with them at all times to keep my students safe. By completing this safety survey assignment, I know that I will be able to create a safe environment in my classroom.

I have met Standard 17, indicator 4, because I have shown the correct modeling of safety behavior to my students.  They are aware of the escape routes posted on the door, they know the water is there if they should need it to flush out their eyes, and several other safety precautions have been brought to their attention by completing this safety survey.

I have met Standard 17, indicator 5, because I have shown I am able to implement safety into the classroom.  I have learned how to use the safety standards we have and to try and improve and implement new standards if possible.
