Ohlone Elementary School, Palo Alto, CA January, 2008 - Present

Student Teacher, K/1st Grade

Applied constructivist teaching methods through integrated units, projects, lessons, and centers in all subject areas for a class of kindergarten and first grade students. Taught whole class, small group, and one-on-one. Differentiated learning opportunities for range of developmental levels, learning abilities, and special needs. Provided a safe environment (emotionally and physically) by spending time and attention on respect, responsibility, and community.

PACT School (at Castro Elementary School), Mountain View, CA August, 2007 - December, 2007

Student Teacher, 4th Grade

Assessed student literacy using district DRA plus range of ten assessments from my credential coursework. Implemented accommodations for special needs students (Asperger's Syndrome, ADD) and ELD students.  Taught whole class and small groups, including managing parents to facilitate more than one small group at a time.  Focused on student interests to create unique and engaging lessons (e.g., learning weights and measures by estimating serving sizes of snack foods, then calculating the calories, fat, sugars and sodium in the estimate vs. the nutrition label).

Designed and implemented long-range writing project:

Six Traits Plus 1 inspired lesson on “Great Beginnings”

Esteem-building peer coaching and editing method

Mini-lessons on adding details and using imagery

Publishing Party for class and parents when books were complete


Sedgwick Elementary School, Cupertino, CA July, 2007

Student Teacher, 4th/5th Grade

Split time leading just the fifth grade in remedial studies lessons and teaching whole class (4th and 5th grade). Practiced and built skills in direct instruction. Helped students build basic skills in mathematics, language arts, and social studies so they could master abstract concepts.  Focused on quickly building student abilities by practicing multiplication tables and explicitly teaching reading strategies (summarize, predict, make connections, and ask questions).


McAuliffe Elementary School, Cupertino, CA January, 2007 – June, 2007

Student Teacher, 3rd Grade

Led whole class, small group, and one-on-one lessons utilizing constructivist learning methods. Focused on making strong mentoring connections with students. Created and adapted lessons to incorporate hands-on methods, purpose and context.

Pioneer Immersion field trip preparation:

Invented, documented, and introduced six pioneer families with various traits that might make them successful or unsuccessful crossing the pioneer trail (e.g., orphans, single parent, two healthy parents, skilled artisans, etc.

Students chose their family composition and roles for the three day field trip after this lesson.
