Assist with Lunch Duty

I would like to preface that, this Lunch Duty was slightly different from perhaps an 'average' lunch duty. Many would say an 'average' lunch duty is when the teacher walks around the cafeteria, monitors the students, and then ensures the cafeteria is clean upon students' exit. During this lunch duty we sat at the end of the hall of the cafeteria and ensured that all students remained either within the cafeteria or within the hallway of the cafeteria. Students are also allowed to go outside, which there is a door within the hallway. The building is the shape of a square with the middle being opened to the outside, so students are free to go outside within the opening of the building (the school is gated on the outside premise of the building). My mentor teacher brought his laptop, where he opened up a pre-prepared and shared excel sheet. Within the excel sheet it had it had multiple pages for the various activities going on during the period. Within the excel sheet were activites ranging from math league to student council. This excel sheet acounts for any students that may be absent during the lunch period, specifically for if there were an emergency.  If a students was leaving the lunch area for any specified reason, they were required to explain to my mentor teacher, present a note, and request to leave. This procedure is to ensure that all students are accounted for and their general location is known. During my specific lunch duty a small portion of students went to an interest meeting on theater. In addition to my mentor teacher and sitting at the end of the hall, the school's security officer was patrolling the halls, and other teaching staff were located within the cafeteria. Students were allotted 30 minutes for lunch, and after a majority of the students had moved onto their next period our work was done.

I was thoroughly impressed with the organization and the concept of the excel sheet for the students. I think this is a great safety precaution and form of accountability for the students. So often students leaving can be chaotic and in some situations dangerous in a crisis situation. Therefore, I think this excel sheet and staff location within the building is a great step towards safety and accountability. Overall, the lunch period is short so it is also a great time to get some work done. It is great that students have the approval and freedom to eat in the cafeteria, outside, or in the hallway; I especially think this is great ability for those students who have social anxiety, do not deal well with large groups or loud noises, or simply for those who prefer to eat alone. The students were well behaved, and overall it was a quiet lunch period.
