Objectives
SWBAT create a graphic organizer that contains strategies that will help them solve arithmetic problems that involve fractions.
SWBAT find relevance in fractions by identifying 2+ ways they use fractions in their everyday lives.
Prior Knowledge
Folding, using a ruler to measure 1 inch, using scissors, following directions
Materials/Resources
-3 sheets of 8.5”X11” graphing paper per student (~180 sheets)
-scissors (1 per student or table group)
-ruler (1 per student or table group)
-pencils
-whiteboard or document camera.
-Fractions Burrito Book (Attached)
-Manipulative Cutouts (2)
-1 Ziploc sandwich bag per student
-Extra pre-made Burrito Books for students who are absent/late/making up the pretest

Lesson Set: Read Piece=Part-Portion by Scott Gifford Show pictures on projector. Ask students to make a prediction. What fraction do you think this picture represents? Does anyone play soccer? Is it true that there are 11 students on a team?
Making the book: Show on Doc Cam, and hold in air 1. Pass out 3 sheets of paper to each student. 2. Fold 3 sheets of paper in half, hamburger style. Do not unfold. 3. Take one sheet and set it aside. 4. Keep the other two sheets together. 5. Looking at the folded paper like they are books: measure 1 inch from bottom of book, and mark it near the spine with a pencil. Then, measure 1 inch from the top of the book, and mark it near the spine with a pencil. 6. On fold of the 2 sheets of paper, cut a slit from the bottom of the book to the first marked line. Do the same for the top. 7. On the single sheet of paper, cut a tiny slit between the two marked lines. 8. Unfold the 2 sheets of paper. Roll them long-wise. 9. Stick the rolled, 2 sheets of paper in the hole of the single-sheet of paper. Release it and pull the 2 sheets of paper straight.
Labeling the book: Show attached Fractions Burrito Book list on document camera (if technology fails, write it on the whiteboard). Tell students: Except for the front cover and back cover, number the inside of the book 1-10. Put your name in the upper right-hand corner of the cover.
Title each page with the following: Cover: Fractions are... Page 1: Vocabulary Page 2: Mixed numbers ↔ Improper fractions Page 3: Reducing Fractions (GCF) Page 4: Adding and subtracting Fractions 1 Page 5: LCD Page 6: Adding and Subtracting Fractions 2 Page 7: Multiplying Page 8: Divide Page 9: Questions and “Aha” moments Page 10: Number Line Back Cover: Blank for now
*Have extras already made for students who are absent/arrive late/have to make-up pretest
Finished? When you notice students are finishing have them “freeze” and tell them what to do when they finish. When finished, students will use remaining time to cut out manipulatives. As they cut out the manipulatives, they will place them in a Ziploc bag. (Students come to desk at front, take 1 Ziploc and 1 of each manipulative worksheet).
Closure: Place Burrito Book, Ziploc, and Manipulatives in folders. You may line up for break if when I call on you, you can give me an example of fractions (pizza, pie, ½ a pair of shoes, anything from the Piece=Part=Portion).

Monitoring Assessment
Ask questions to assure students are listening.
Do it together rather than “I do” “You do” because they have all made it before.

What's next?
What are fractions? Define: fraction, numerator, denominator.
What worked?
The students enjoyed the read-aloud. I only showed them the photographs in the story, not the text. I asked them to predict what fraction the photograph represented. They seemed to enjoy the book. At the end of class when I asked students to give me an example of fractions in real life, many of the students used examples from the book.
What would I change?
While making the burrito books, students talked between steps. It was difficult to get students to stop talking so the next set of directions could be given. I got really frustrated having to repeatedly ask the students to be quiet, "look at me and listen" (I bet the students were tired of hearing it too). It would have been nice to have a sound clip/bell/rainstick that indicated when it was time to be quiet and listen for the next step.
There were a few students who had trouble seeing what I put on the projector. At least five students had to move closer to the screen. Next time I will have hardcopies printed out (enough for at least 1 per table group).
