Library Learning Commons Orientation Activities
Orientation Update for 2010-2011:
As part of the continuing process of evaluating and updating the orientation process for new and incoming students, a revamped Orientation powerpoint was created in the summer of 2011 and included as part of the information literacy sessions administered to classes either within the learning commons, or in other classrooms of the college. The Orientation was designed to be more visual with updated photos and screenshots of relevant databases. Changes in core databases were also reflected in the new Orientation, attached below.
Title V Orientation requirement - Title V requires that new students receive a Library Commons Orientation. Because all new students are required to take the Freshman Seminar Course, the Orientation was administered during information literacy instruction sessions delivered to these courses, as follows:
| Orientations given in Freshman Seminar courses - Oct. 2010 - Sept. 2011 | Total number of students in attendance |
| 41 | 806 |
Human Resources Management Libguide
In addition, an online library orientation in the form of a libguide was created in 2010-11 specifically tailored for the Human Resources Management program and its students. This libguide is attached below. Libguides are an updated, electronic version of the classic library pathfinders. Libguides provide more intensive, interactive resource and service support for all disciplines and can be adjusted and built upon over time. They also include a feedback "comments" mechanism that can be turned on for each libguide to solicit responses from patrons. This feedback mechanism enables assessment of the libguide itself but also provides a communication channel to viewers. Please consult the Information Literacy section for a detailed updated on our Libguide program.
2009-10 Overview
The attachments show the activities of the Library Learning Commons orientations presented to new/incoming students and faculty. The orientations as Powerpoint presentations were given in the Fall 2010 to provide important summary information to help new and continuing students become familiar with the concepts and services in the learning commons environment. Orientations include a tour of the facility, review of services, policies, procedures, benefits and core educational values that the Library Learning Commons represents.
Initial Objectives and Progress
In 2009-10 The Library Learning Commons faculty presented a series of 4 orientations with general information about operations and services. Library Learning faculty also presented 2 orientations geared toward the large student and faculty body of the School of Health and Natural Sciences, for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Nursing Programs as well as Freshman Seminar. These orientation sessions seemed to be most effective evidenced by the flood of activities, inquiries, and collaborative space usage. In order to keep our growing academic community informed about our services and instructional innovations, we will continue to offer comprehensive orientation sessions in the beginning of the fall semester of each academic year.
