The idea of copyright is to protect the creator. It gives credit where credit is due. Copyrights give credit to works on paper, film, videotape, disk, CD, or DVD. (Morley p. 204) Gaining permissions can be time consuming at times and at others it is as easy as an email or call to the publisher.

The more we use technology and request students use it the closer we must guard the protection of copyright laws. It really is not hard to copy the URL and add as a reference when quoting or paraphrasing an article. We must also be sure to teach how much of an original piece we use as educators and stay within the law as Fair-Use plays a part of our lives.

Encompassed in intellectual property rights are the rights of those who produce original works of art whether it is through musical composition, theatrical (live or recorded), different physical artwork (eg:drawings, painting, sculpture, etc…), all types of writing, as well as inventions or designs and trademarks to name a few.

The brochure that follows covers some of Fair Use / Copyright but is not inclusive. A mere brochure could not cover all aspects of these two.
