Pumpkin Art

Context

During my student teaching semester in first grade at Pressly Elementary, my class made pumpkin art. After discussing that primary colors can be mixed to make other colors, I created a pumpkin art workstation. In this workstation, students mixed, with their fingers, yellow and red paint to make orange. After each student explained to me how they made orange paint, I gave them other materials to decorate their pumpkin. They used pipe cleaners, construction paper, and glitter glue. After each child had made their pumpkin I displayed them in the hall with a big orange pumpkin that said "Red and Yellow make Orange."

Impact

My students loved this activity and having their beautiful work displayed in the hall. They also loved getting their fingers messy while mixing the paint. I will use this activity in the future because it is a great hands-on way for students to learn how to mix primary colors.

Alignment

I met Standard 12 by integrating art into my literacy block workstations.
