A Response to the Ideas Presented in
“Confronting the Racism of Low Expectations”
In the article, “Confronting the Racism of Low Expectations,” Julie Landsman discusses the racism that occurs in educators’ attitudes, robbing minority students of opportunities for success. I feel that she brought great studies and information to the surface to help illustrate the problems that exist and possible solutions. I have decided, after reading Landsman’s comments, that the best ways to overcome low expectation are to engage in dialogue with students and parents, to immerse yourself in other cultures, and to participate in exploring issues relating to cultural diversity.
I believe if a teacher communicates with her students she will come to know their strengths, interests, and weaknesses better, making herself less prone to assumptions. I think that when an educator attempts to contact the parents she can better understand where the student comes from and learn possible challenges that child may be facing. It also opens the door for the parent to become involved in their child’s education, by perhaps volunteering in the classroom or helping with homework.
I feel that immersing ourselves into other cultures will allow us to step out of our comfort zones into new situations. We will become familiar with new traditions, faiths, and values not in the majority of our society. This will give teachers a chance to develop new perspectives and insights of the world around them, hopefully allowing them to adopt new beliefs within their classroom.
Lastly, I think that discovering culturally diverse issues will better prepare educators to avoid assumptions and to open up their minds to new way of thinking. I feel that teachers should be involved in group discussions, readings, and lectures to examine current issues in our society. I believe that some teachers will become aware of their wrongful behaviors and how they can improve their classroom atmosphere.
By engaging in dialogue, immersing ourselves in other cultures, and learning of cultural issues, I know that teachers can overcome low expectations based upon race. It will not always be easy, but I know how important it is for every child to reach their full potential. They can not do this if educators continue to use racist assumptions within their classrooms.
