Measurement

ruler.jpg

The central idea of the attached lesson is for students to convert metric measurements to their U.S. equivalents.  This lesson can be geared toward all age groups.  There is one worksheet and directions for the younger group and another set of instructions and a worksheet for older ages.  The mathematics taught is how to convert metric measurements using formulas.  It also gives the younger children an opportunity to estimate their answer before hand.  The older students have to do some arithmetic as well to come to their answer.  I chose this lesson because it can tie into other subjects.  It would be a great time to learn about the Olympics and possibly have other subjects taught with the same theme.  I also liked that it tied in technology, requiring the students to use an online metric converter.

I would make sure that the students worked in partners.  This way they could work more independently, but still have someone to ask questions and receive help from.  One thing I would change would be the worksheet.  It gives children practice converting to U.S. measurements, but not the other way around.  I feel that there could be emphasis placed upon that.

I think this lesson gives children practice needed to convert measurements correctly.  For the older ages, it will also teach them the formulas, so they will not just memorize them.  I liked the idea and theme of this lesson and will want to use it in my future classroom.
