Rationale for Science Safety Checklist:
Context-
In my science class during Block II, I conducted a Science Safety Checklist which answers safety issues to be aware of when in the classroom or school. I conducted this survey during my internship in my third grade class at Mountain View Elementary.
By doing this survey, I am now aware of the safety issues that are important when preparing my own class and when I am part of another classroom setting. It also allowed me to become more familiar with the class setting I am in during my internship.
Impact-
When I teach, the Science Safety Checklist will be a vital part of my classroom and making sure that all safety issues are covered. It will also better prepare me as a teacher. Students safety and my personal safety during science--or any other time--are one of the most important things to be sure of, as I may be held responsible as the teacher.
Alignment-
I have met DPI Standard 17, Indicator 1 by including procedures for emergency situations, as well as sanitizing materials.
I have met DPI Standard 17, Indicator 2 by including placement of closest fire extinguisher, fire exits, escape routes, chemicals in the class, and Material Safety Data Sheets.
I have met DPI Standard 17, Indicator 3 by demonstrating an interest in knowing where and what the chemicals in the classroom are and if proper information has been filed for these chemicals, such as the Material Safety Data Sheets.
I have met DPI Standard 17, Indicator 4 by including documentation of thermometers and making sure there are no mercury based ones in the class. I also included safety information for first aid, student allergies, and animals in the classroom. I modeled proper hand washing procedure and have made sure there is a place for students to wash out their eyes if needed.
I have met DPI Standard 17, Indicator 5 by incorporating the Safety Science Checklist in my classroom and using it whenever necessary for reference purposes. I would hang or post this checklist somewhere in the classroom where it could be accessible to students and other teachers or substitutes as well.
