Service Learning Experience Rationale

Context

As a part of my CI 3110 class during Block II, I was required to complete a ten-hour service related experience.  Based on this requirement, I decided to have a North Carolina State Highway Patrolman, Trooper Willis Miller, to come into the classroom to discuss some important information with my first grade students.  During his visit, he discussed several important topics with the students such as safety issues, and how the aspects of his job benefit society.  Afterward, I had the students to make thank you cards to the State Troopers of Ashe County, as a way of thanking them for being a community hero.

Impact

As a result of this service learning experience, my students were able to discover how State Troopers focus on making our community good for all of its citizens.  The students also learned how important it is to respect all types of police officers.

Alignment

I met standard 4, indicator 11 by showing the students how North Carolina State Troopers portray good citizenship by caring for the common good of all.

I met standard 11, indicator 1 by incorporating communication with a North Carolina State Trooper into the lesson.

I met standard 11, indicator 2 by showing my students the importance of jobs within the human services field.

I met standard 11, indicator 3 by teaching my students about how new technology innovations such as police car radios and sirens are used to benefit police officers and the community.
