Week 2

September 1, 2010 -- Class 2

Discovery question: What do students need to know to be considered “information literate”? What technologies should they use and understand? What are some of the potential challenges and benefits to integrating technology into the classroom?

Agenda:  Lesson Plan Completion, Web page Introduction

  • Q and A:  Rough Draft of Lesson Plans
  • Technology integration
  • Begin creating lesson plan using Taskstream lesson planning tool and USF Standard Lesson Plan.
  • Back-to-school-night Powerpoints!

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Go to Edutopia: http://www.edutopia.org/tech-integration
Read introduction and watch 2 videos of your choice plus at least one of the “real-life example”

Go to Technology Integration Matrix : http://fcit.usf.edu/matrix/. View at least 2 of the videos.

Now write a one-page (double spaced Times New Roman 12 or comparable font/size) reflection. Be sure to include your opinion on whether your lesson plan is at a higher or lover level of technology integration. Use either the Technology Integration Matrix or the LoTi (Levels of Technology Integration) ratings. Some questions to ask yourself:

In my lesson plan:

Are my students actively using technology, or passively receiving information?

Are students working together or alone?

Are students using tools to build understanding?

Are they solving real-world problems?

Are they using technology to monitor their own learning? (learning environment)

Am I using technology to deliver the content? (example: showing a video clip to the class)

Am I directing the students to use software tools in the traditional way? (example: using Microsoft Word to type a paper)

Am I asking students to take a software tool and modify it for a new task? (example: using a computer drawing program to make a map of the classroom)

Am I creating a learning environment where technology is used all througough the day? (example: students use different tools all day long to accomplish learning tasks)

Am I helping students engage in learning tasks that would be impossible without technology? (example: students correspond with email pals in another country to learn about world cultures)

Where does your lesson plan fit into the matrix? Why? How could you adapt it to integrate technology at a higher level?

What video clips did you view? Describe one or two of them briefly and explain why you would or would not want to do a similar lesson. What would the benefits be for students? The challenges to implementing the lesson?

DUE: Post one-page response to your Taskstream Portfolio and also e-mail it to Miranda by September 7.
