September 8, 2010 -- Class 3

 

Discovery Question: What are ethical, moral and equity issues relating to computer use in education?  What controversies occur at school sites regarding web and computer use?  What are solutions to these issues?  

 

Agenda:  Creating Websites Using Weebly; ethical use of technology

  • Weebly web page Tutorial
  • Examples of Web pages from practice
  • Teaching ethical use of technology; discussion of scenarios at http://www.doug-johnson.com/ethics/
  • In class: Begin work on your web site

 

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Use Weebly to create a class web page you might use in practice later on.

 

You are free to include whatever you like on your site, and gear it toward the grade level/subject of your choice. Do make sure it has:

-- A home page with at least 2 other pages linked from the home page

-- At least one image or photograph

-- At least 3 resource links you think may be useful to you as a teacher or to your students (for example, on a social studies page, links to current events or history sites)

 

  1. DUE: Finish your classroom Web site and be prepared to present it in class on September 15.

 

  1. Write a technology policy for your classroom using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer.

 

Classroom Tech Policy

At least one page

 Can be bulleted list with short (1-3 sentence) description of each item.

Areas to consider:

Cell phones

Laptop use

Appropriate web sites

Plagiarism

Using technology to cheat on tests

Cyber bullying, etc.

 

DUE: Post to Taskstream and email to Miranda by September 23 (day before Class 5 – you have 2 weeks for this assignment).

1. Engrade logins; questions; other housekeeping items

2. Guest Speaker: Ms. Anna Koval!

Brainstorm what should be on a class web site/view and evaluate teacher web sites (group activity)

3. Weebly demo/time to begin classroom sites

4. Your classroom technology policy is due in two weeks. This may be a group project. Brainstorm list of topics (cell phones, Internet use, etc.); view sample policies at http://www.taskstream.com/ts/doyle35/ed600.html.

 

 

5. Last item -- how to start building your Taskstream portfolio and adding class assignments to use later for your teaching portfolio. Demo/follow along to attach Powerpoint, reflection, etc.

 

Classroom Web Site due next week -- should have at least 2 pages linked from home page, at least one image or photo, at least 3 resource links (other sites on the Web that you think will be useful to your students). You will present sites in small groups (not to whole class). Begin working on Tech Policy (Due Sept. 23 - note error on syllabus -- it is not due Sept. 21).
