lausd.jpeg Study Purpose: Does technology have an impact on student achievement?

Unit of Study:  Eighty-two mathematics/science classrooms (teachers and students) from eight LAUSD middle schools are currently under study.  All schools and classroom teachers were randomly selected.  Study is being conducted for two years.  The first year of the study (2003-2004) included sixth and seventh grade classrooms.  Eighth grade classrooms have been added to the study for the 2004-2005 school year. The project may continue for one additional year.

Technology: Study classrooms are equipped with an ACTIVboard, LCD projector, teacher and student wireless computers, curricular cart with a digital microscope, a printer and scanner, digital camera. Each participating school received one digital camcorder for MSTP classroom use. In addition, science classrooms are equipped with Vernier scientific probeware, and eighth grade mathematics classrooms are equipped with class sets of TI84+ graphing calculators.

On-Line Resources:  Study teachers and classrooms have access to varied on-line lesson-building resources such as TaskStream, Big Chalk, CTAP, and DigitalCurriculum. The faculties at participating schools have access to the on-line MultiMedia Services provided by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). Additional resources provided the school, are Video Discovery and The Futures Channel.

Staff Development:  Study teachers are provided with staff development to assist them in using and integrating technology into their standards-based curriculum.  MSTP science and mathematics coaches provide ongoing staff development and assistance for the project schools, teachers, and staff.
