Artifact 18 - 2 lesson plans w/ All Aspects of Industry components highlighted

The Virginia All Aspects of Industry Standards are covered in a generalized sense of the concept (as opposed to a specific industry) due to the needs and nature of the Education for Employment student.  For example:  Standard 002 "Explain management in terms of methods typically used to manage enterprises over time within the industry as well as methods of expanding and diversifying workers' tasks and broadening worker involvement in decisions."  The cooperative education internship students begin at entry level job positions and gain their first perspective on management in terms of the supervision and guidance received at the job site.  Based on the relationship between the student employee and the business employer, valuable lessons can be obtained from this relationship to include diversifying work tasks, cross-training opportunities, and inclusion in the decision-making process of the company.  The co-op coordinator and employer utilize the individual student training plan for task diversification and cross training opportunities.  This training plan allows for skill level advancement as work experience is gained and perhaps promotional possibilities for the coop student in the future. One of the EFE 2 cooperative internship students has been employed at the Regal Kingstowne Consolidated Theatres for two years.  The entry level job title position at the theatre is "floor staff."  Duties of the position include a rotation of tasks to include usher, ticket taker, box office sales, and concessions.  Students are trained in these assignments and rotated based on training needs and expertise.  This cooperative education student worked as floor staff for one year, receiving a promotion to "shift lead" last Spring.  Now in his senior year of high school, he is supervising a team of floor staff employees many of whom are adults.  He is invited and currently participates in managerial meetings. His knowledge, eagerness to learn, and work ethic are qualities that will move him into a management position after graduation.  The managers have already approached him regarding the job promotion, while he concurrently attends a local community college.  Their rave reviews of his job performance and their flexibility with his college schedule will allow him to balance work and school in the Fall of 2010. A similar situation is true for another EFE 2 student in retail at Michael's Arts and Craft store.  This student started in EFE 1 as a sales associate and quickly moved up to front end cashier. After he completed the OSHA credentialing and proved his work ethic, he has been promoted to a store supervisor.  Both of the above students are making $10 an hour in a managerial position.  They share their personal job experiences during the EFE class and from their stories, student gain insight into the big picture of the pathway to management.

Two lesson plans focusing on Aspects of Industry Standards 006-Labor Issues and 008-Health, Safety and Environmental Issues are attached.  Because both lessons focus entirely on a specific Aspects of Industry standard, no additional highlighting appears in the documents.
