Artifact 66 -Describe green-oriented CTSO community service project or classroom projects

At the Lee County Career and Technical Center we are striving each year to become a “greener” more responsible workplace.

The Lee County Career & Technical Center  is working with the Lee County Board of Supervisors to better prepare and control our environment for our local citizens. The Building Trades Program is currently in the process of building a recycling storage building where departments in the Lee County Career Center will use to recycle, paper, plastic, and cardboard. 

Within the Computer Information Systems Program we have gone green-oriented with the Certiport testing center. Certiport works with industry-leading certification providers to bring their programs successfully to market. With a particular expertise in academia, Certiport is able to create a unique "go-to-market" plan that drives global program performance with its extensive network of over 10,000 partners. Certiport, Microsoft, and all testing center such as the Lee County Career and Technical Center have gone “GREEN”, meaning that all certified teaching candidates no longer receive a certificate by mail. Each candidate has an on-line transcript.

Within the Computer Information Systems Program ink cartridges are collected and recycled.  Students also collect printer paper that is wrinkled or torn (not fit for the use in the printer) and we donate that paper to the art department or to local kindergarten classes.

As an instructor, I have been using more project Rubrics and going to each workstation to look  at students' work in the “Print Preview” stage instead of having students send their work to the printer. This saves ink, paper, and time.

Artifact 67 - List of green competencies that could enhance curriculum

There are many concepts to examine when trying to enhance the curriculum of the Computer Information Systems program in regards to the health, safety, and environmental issues in both the workers and the larger community.

Listed below are a few “Green” competencies that can be placed in the program: 

1. Students will understand the importance of recycling materials and will take part in several recycling efforts in the classroom.
2. Identify the importance of  the “Power Save Mode” in using electronics
3. Discuss and understand the difference in using rechargeable batteries in comparison to other batteries.
4. Identify the many opportunities and benefits of recycling and using recycled ink cartridges
5. Discuss the importance of the efforts by students, teachers, and community, to create more sustainability in the environment.

Artifact 69 -Document classroom practices that support sustainability

The Computer Information Systems Program is working on improving classroom practices daily that support sustainability. Below are some of the ways we are trying to minimize energy consumption and saving the environment:

1. The entire school system uses an automatic lighting system. This system forces lights to go off after so many minutes of non-movement in the classroom.
2. Old computer casings are donated to the Auto Body Repair Program which uses the cases for bondo.
3. We are now using rechargeable batteries for cameras and other battery operated devices.
4. LCD Projectors are turned off when not in use.
5. The entire school system's air conditioning unit is set on timers so that energy can be saved when school is not in session.
6. Use of LCD monitors saves on energy compared to that of a CRT monitor.
7. Computers go to sleep mode when not in use which saves 80% in the internal power supply.
8. Use the power management settings on monitors to sleep mode when not in use saves more energy than using a screen saver.

All classrooms are getting better at going green.  I expect that it will continue and get stronger as we become more involved and more educated in the “Green Process” Eventually going green will become more expectation than the exception.
