This is one competency that I would like to strengthen.  I took full advantage of the Education Law class that I took during my studies at New York University, but learned that laws are always changing, evolving, and emerging.  Therefore, a school leader who wishes to successfully apply statutes and regulations as required by law and implement school policies in accordance with law should find a way to keep up to date with those changes.

I think that this standard is related to the one on ethical behavior, and that as long as a school leader has the drive and determination to run his or her school ethically and legally, then the school is much more likely to succeed.

What is needed is a desire to respect the law, follow it, and advocate for changes as one sees the need for such emerge.

The evidence that I have to offer shows my competency in both understanding and following requirements set in place by New York law.

Taking the time to understand the laws surrounding Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students who require more than general education is a necessary part of being a successful school leader.  An example of a fictional, yet accurate, IEP is attached below.

Additionally, knowing and following the laws that protect children as well as understanding a school’s responsibilities (and those within it) to do so are crucial.  Therefore, attached you will also find a copy of my completed New York State Mandated Reporter Training.
