Artifact #51 - Teacher/mentor
1. I served as a crisis management counselor for our school during two incidents over the past year. Our students were involved in a bus accident. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries but numerous students were sent to the hospital. The rest of the students were sent back to our school to await pick up by their parents. I talked with them and worked through their concerns. The other incident occurred when a fellow student - a volunteer fire fighter- was killed in a car accident while responding to a fire. I volunteered a good deal of time helping students through that grieving process.
2. Though there are no other staff members who teach the same course, I do assist new teachers in acclimating to the school and their new responsibilities. Most MTC teachers come from the private sector so they appreciate someone to guide them in adapting to the educational environment.
1. I teach inservice sessions for teachers on CPR.
2. Chairman - VA Department of Health, Office of Emergency Services, Financial Assistance Review Committee. This committee reviews grant applications annually and awards grants totaling $3,500,000 to fire and rescue departments across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
3. Elected to be a member of the Central Shenandoah EMS Council Executive Board.
4. Asked by the community to serve on a committee to examine the merger of two fire and rescue organizations.
