Artifact #10 - Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Objectives
I. Goal
The goal of the Fire and Rescue program is for each student to achieve the following certifications:
- Firefighter I
- Firefighter II
- EMT
- CPR and First Aid
- HazMat
- Objectives
- To combine lecture and hands-on skills training each day to obtain the skills necessary for successful completion.
- For all students to be ready to sit for their certification exam by May 1 of each school year.
- To require students to have regular attendance, including the rule that they cannot miss more than 10% of class time.
- To require students to make up any missed class time.
- To involve Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Department personnel in the classroom and skills training as part of the collaboration between MTC and Rockingham County Fire and Rescue.
- To make sure students have the opportunity to use Rockingham County Fire and Safety equipment to ensure their training is as realistic as possible.
- To cover each VA Department of Education competency for each course and keep a log to ensure each student has satisfactorily reached each competency.
- To assure that students reach 80% competency level.
- To assure that students are able to reach a 70% level on the written state certification exam.
- To require students to be involved in 144 training hours as required to sit for the Firefighter I certification.
- To require students to be involved in 121 hours as required to sit for the EMT certification exam.
- To require students to undertake scenario-based training to prepare for their EMT and HAZMAT certification
- To require each student to participate in a “live-burn” exercise at the Fire Department’s training grounds.
- To use, in class, ranking officers and a promotions process, like the Fire Department, with student officers responsible for problem-solving.
