The Literacy Peer Group Coaching

The concept of literacy peer group coaching does not depict the coach as older and wiser while the person being mentored is younger and less experienced. Coaching, especially peer coaching, along with theoretical discussion with a peer group is more germane to our vision.

As the students enter REED 695, the practicum portion of the Master's of Literacy Education Program at Frostburg State University, they will function as a Literacy Peer Group Coaching Team for the purpose of discussing and reflecting on theories and issues related to literacy, supporting student research, and helping the student with the other components of the program. The Literacy Peer Group Coaching Team will also serve as a sampling group for performance assessment of the literacy program.  The Literacy Peer Group Coaching Team members will be paired with the undergraduate pre-service teachers from one of the following programs:  Elementary (Elem), Early Childhood (EC), EC/Elem., or Middle School teacher education programs.  Together the Coaches will meet with the pre-service teachers as well as with a tutoring student during their two (2) semesters in Reading Clinic REED 695 and as other opportunities present themselves in other courses.
