General Advisement Information

Welcome to the Ella Cline Shear School of Education Advisement Newsletter!

This newsletter was created using the newsletter template in TaskStream.

In this issue you will find news and information about SOE admissions, requirements, certification, and registration.

Please read this introductory section and the information under the tab for your major.

Please note that for fall 2017 an active TASKSTREAM subscription will be required for ALL undergraduate education classes.

PLEASE PLAN YOUR FALL EDUCATION SCHEDULE BY REVIEWING THE PRINTED MASTER SCHEDULE located below in the attachments area to review the offerings in the School of Education and the required field visit/practicum times.

DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON THE INFORMATION YOU SEE ON KNIGHTWEB.  The master schedule is subject to change, so please check it periodically.

1.  Education blocks are listed in pairs in the master schedule and you must register for corresponding courses, i.e. Curr 213 01

corresponds with Curr 316 01.  Do NOT cross-block (a course from 1 paired section and a course from another paired section) or you will be

PULLED from the courses and become last to re-register.  Please register for the sections that are designated for your major, e.g., if you are

an Early Childhood with Childhood Education major, do not register for the sections that are listed for Childhood with Special Education majors, and vice-versa.

2.  If you fail all or part of a block, you CANNOT go on to the next block.  You must successfully complete one block before you go on to another block.  A grade of C- or better is required to successfully complete a course in your major, a required education class and related requirements for education. You must successfully complete one block before you go on to the next block. The ONLY blocks that can be taken together are blocks 1 and 2.

            3.  Please keep the days/times open that are listed in the master schedule for field work, participation, etc.  If the master schedule says you need to keep 8-noon open on certain days, please do not schedule an 11:00 a.m. class on those days (with the exception of the related education courses for the block.  YOU NEED THIS PARTICIPATION TIME TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE YOUR BLOCK. If the field work time creates scheduling problems, please come to South 200 to fill out a scheduling conflict form. Conflicts identified BEFORE registration begins can be resolved more easily.

            4.  Adolescence certification students registering for Block II (EDUC 204/SPED 205):  You will be required to complete a 20-hour field experience for Block II (Educ 204/Sped 205) that practicum MUST be successfully completed before or during the December/January break or you will not receive credit for Educ 204 and will NOT be allowed to continue into Block III in the spring semester. The last day to turn in practicum requirements is the first day of spring classes.

            5.  PLEASE NOTEA 2.75 GPA is required for School of Education students to continue in the program.  If your GPA is below a 2.75 at the end of the spring 2016 semester, the School of Education MAY EXERCISE THE OPTION TO REMOVE YOU FROM A BLOCK REGISTRATION--THIS WILL AFFECT BLOCK II AND BEYOND.

6.  Please make sure that you review the guidelines for admission into the School of Education and apply at the appropriate time.  This may also affect your registration in a block. The packet for applying is at: http://www.geneseo.edu/education/admissions.  Additional information may be found at the link and/or under the admissions tab in this newsletter.

            7.  Common registration errors:  If a course is listed as lecture/activity (e.g. INTD 302), you MUST input both numbers in your registration.  DO NOT "click" on education courses to add them to your schedule; you MUST type in the CRN by hand due to co-requisites and grouping within a block.  Please pay attention to prerequisites, i.e., you will not be allowed into Curr 213 and Curr 316 without Math 140 or Math 141 as a prerequisite. If you have Math 141, but not Math 140, you will need a permit form to register for block III.

            8.  If you have any scheduling problems, please contact your academic advisor.  If they are unable to provide you with a solution, you may stop in South 200 and fill out a scheduling conflict form. Please submit this form as soon as possible. Conflicts identified BEFORE registration begins can be resolved more easily. Please feel free to contact the office if you have any additional questions. We are located in South Hall room 200 and can be reached at 585-245-5560.

To be eligible for student teaching you need to meet specific requirements. More details can be found below and under the student teaching area of this newsletter.

Student Teaching Registration

Students who are not graduating until May 2018 or are concerned that they will not meet all student teaching requirements at the end of the Fall 2017 semester should register for courses other than student teaching as a precaution.  Register for at least twelve credit hours.  If you are later accepted into Student Teaching for the Fall 2017 semester and placed, those courses can be dropped and the Student Teaching courses added.  However, if you register for Student Teaching and are not accepted, the needed courses may be closed out.

The requirements for admission into student teaching are:

  1. Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater
  2. Education GPA of 2.75 or greater
  3. Major/Concentration GPA of 2.75 or greater
  4. Completion of two-thirds or greater of the major/concentration and related requirements
  5. No grades of Incomplete in any course
  6. No grades of E (or less than minimum competency if applicable) in any required course.  If you have received a grade of E or not achieved minimum competency in a required course, it must be retaken successfully prior to student teaching
  7. Completion of earlier Education blocks and related courses (i.e. H&PE 350, PSYC 215 or 216, etc).
  8. Completion of required seminars .... Infection Control (also know as Blood-bourne pathogens), Child Abuse Identification, DASA, and School Violence (SAVE). (Autism seminar is required for Special Education majors.)

We will continue to look for placements for students on our Fall 2017 list who register for classes other than Student Teaching until either (1) the student is denied entry into Student Teaching after the final requirement check in June or (2) the student informs the Student Teaching Office that s/he wishes to defer student teaching to a later semester or is dropping certification.  It is therefore important that students inform the Student Teaching office if they have decided not to student teach before the start of the Fall 2017 semester.
