Importance

When it comes to child labor, there are many consequences that may have permanent negative impacts on the lives of these children. The “Bolivia’s Child Laborers” video speaks of first-hand experiences about the dangers that children face daily, such as working in a dark mine where something might fall on you and potentially kill you. Apart from the hazards at work, children that are spending all day working are compromising their education. As the video said, “an uneducated child grows up into an uneducated adult.” This means that the a child who is working may never have the chance to advance in life since they miss out on getting educated. This creates a vicious cycle that will maintain a bad economy in the country that this is occurring in.

Whenever there is a conversation about a global issue that creates or contributes to global inequality, it is important to mention how the issue might be solved, or at least reduced. In the article by Lire Ersado, he explored different developing countries to see what the reason for child labor appears to be, as well as how different solutions might be effective depending on whether they are applied in a rural or urban area. His main findings were that across all countries and areas, what seems to be the most effective strategy for reducing child labor and keeping the children in school is to strengthen effects to increase adult education and wage. This article does a good job pointing out the flawed aspects of the countries in which child labor rates are high.
