Language Arts in 5th/6th grade

Language Arts consists of reading, writing, and all of the fun stuff in-between. To help students excel at Language Arts, we break down the subject into the following programatic areas of which content we try to sync with our project:

Writer's Workshops: During writing mini-lessons, I discuss and model one or two writing skills. These skills are then discussed during teacher reads, guided reading, and highlighted in the writing assignment for the week. Often our writer's workshops will focus on skills needed to complete a writing assignment necessary for the completion of a project.

Working With Words: During Working with Words, we practice analyzing words for patterns and developing student spelling and vocabulary skills. To help guide our WwW time, we follow the Words their Way study for phonics, covabulary and spelling instruction. The developmentally driven Words their Way provides a practical and individualized way to study words with students.

Caught'Ya Grammar and daily geography: This year, daily grammar will be combined with the famously popular daily geography from last year.Caught'ya builds grammar basics in context allowing students to apply their grammar on a daily basis in all writing activities.

Self Selected Reading and Reading Workshops: This time is an instructional opportunity for students to select materials to read independently and choose how and what to respond to within the text. I model effective reading strategies through group reading, model comprehension strategies through mini-lessons, conference with individual students to support and guide their reading development, and provide a structured environment in which students can read and share.
