TITLE: Teaching Language Arts for Linguistic Justice: An Extensive Review of the Literature
ABSTRACT: This literature review investigates the new approaches to teaching secondary language arts for linguistic justice. Students from diverse language backgrounds and whose first language is not White Mainstream English are labeled as deficient due to historical and systemic linguistic racism. Research on new strategies that promote linguistic justice resulted in the following categories of literature: Codeswitching, Translanguaging, Critical Language Awareness, Language of Solidarity, and Anti-racist Black Langauge Pedagogy. Further implementation of critical language pedagogies should be done as few exist. Scholars suggest increased public resistance to linguistically racist policies and pedagogies by educators and others and the establishment of new ones that promote linguistic justice.
