UED teacher candidates are provided a description of the appeal process mandated in MN statutes pertaining to a candidate not receiving a licensure recommendation in the UTP Student Handbook (see section IX item 5. “UTP Policy on the Appeal Process Regarding Licensure Recommendations.” The policy describes both the informal appeal process and formal appeal process. Under the informal process, the Licensing Officer works with the academic advisor and Chair to address the concerns preventing the licensing from being recommended. They set up a corrective action plan to address the specific concern(s) if possible within a given timeline and expectations. At this point the teacher candidate has the opportunity to agree or disagree. If they disagree with the corrective action plan, then it moves to a more formal process. The formal process involves the teacher candidate following the university procedures in addressing grievances, starting with the Ombuds office.
