The UED’s updated template agreement with school partners addresses the responsibilities held by the school partner in section 2. DISTRICT RESPONSIBILITIES and section 3. MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Furthermore, Section 1d states, “The University will provide the District with objectives for the classroom experience program, and educational goals for each teacher candidate, as appropriate. Implementation of those objectives will be accomplished jointly by the University and the District.” The UED Director of Field Experiences sends emails to each school administrator and cooperating teacher their responsibilities for each teacher candidate placement that they agree to host (see Evidence). They are also shared with teacher candidates in the Urban Teaching Practicum (EDU 311), Advanced Urban Teaching Practicum (EDU 450), and student teaching so they have clarity about what to expect from their cooperating teacher and host school.
Responsibilities held by the school partner vary during clinical experiences ranging from early practicum placements for the Urban Teaching Practicum (EDU 311), to Advanced Urban Teaching Practicum (EDU 450) and to student teaching. Among other things, the school partner is to provide the teacher candidate an opportunity to work in a teaching-learning situation under the supervision of a practicing teacher (i.e., cooperating teacher) who holds a valid license in the content area and has at least 3 years teaching experience. The responsibilities of school partners are largely undertaken by cooperating teachers. Throughout the student teaching experience, the cooperating teacher and teacher candidate are expected to function as a teaching team (i.e., planning, teaching, and evaluating). The basic role of a cooperating teacher is to supervise, model, guide and evaluate teacher candidates in order to assist with the development of their teaching skills.
