Spanish I focuses on the identification of the spoken language as such, reaction in a limited way in a social situation without complication, appropriate response to classroom commands, identification of text type of spoken material, recognition key grammatical structures necessary for comprehension, and recognition register in dialogues. Students will achieve a working knowledge of basic Spanish communication and be able to communicate on everyday topics to satisfy basic survival needs and minimum courtesy. Spanish I is a formal step in developing proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and cultural awareness. In the first year, listening and speaking are emphasized. Instruction include practice in reading strategies, word attack skills, inferences, study skills, reference skills, writing skills, thinking skills, and group dynamics.
