Lesson 11

FINAL PERSUASION ACTIVITY PARTY DAY!

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate their understanding of persuasion vocabulary by completing a written post test. SWBAT reflect thoughtfully on their own and their peer’s persuasion product activity.

Materials: Post Test handout (15 copies)  (SEE ASSESSMENT SECTION FOR POST TEST), student commercials on DVD, cookies, juice

Adaptations/Modifications: Check for understanding frequently with all students due to ELL status. Kari (IEP) to pre-teach material, reinforce vocabulary, and extend time for homework up to two days. Erika (IEP) extended time, regular breaks, quiet setting for testing, and shortened assignments. Brianna has the option to test in an alternative environment.

Literacy: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of persuasion and argumentation in writing through a short answer post test.

Set: “As you all can probably see, we are going to have a bit of a party and watch our commercials today. But before we get to that part, we need to take care of a few things. Please pull out your homework so that I can collect it.” I will walk around and collect student homework (5 min).

Application: “Great! The next step is completing a post-test. Just like the pre-test that we did a few weeks ago, I am not going to be grading you. However, I would like you to use your best handwriting, spelling, and write in complete sentences. Thanks!” I will hand out the post-test and walk around to answer questions for students. (10 min)

“Thank you all for your hard work. I’m going to pass out the popcorn and juice now, and we are going to watch the commercials that we each made. At the end we are going to discuss what we saw, and give feedback to one another.” As a class we will watch the commercials.  (20 min)

Evaluation: At the end of the video, I will ask for feedback and ask questions such as: what did you see? What worked? What didn’t work? (3 min)

Closing: “I want to thank all of you for the effort that you put into this project. I will be handing back your work and final grades for this project by next week. Thank you!” (2 min)

Reflection: This class party was really fun. I brought juice and cookies for the students, and asked them to politely respect each video. It was priceless to see the students faces as they watched themselves on video. The feedback the students gave was surprisingly insightful, and I loved how hard they worked. The post-tests look great, and I am excited to start grading them. I will miss working with this group of students. Overall this teaching experience has been very meaningful.
