My most important accomplishment and biggest project during my internship was planning and executing the International Student Celebration for the university-wide Weekend of Excellence (WOE). I attended various planning meetings with other WOE participants and departments and collaborated between FSYA and OIP. The following groups were recognized during the ceremony for their academic acheivements: undergraduate international students who made the Dean's List, English Language Learning students, and graduating Chicago Center exchange students. The event was a great success, both for students and the staff of the collaborating offices. The best part of the event were the student speakers who shared their stories, lessons, and experiences from their time in the United States. Afterwards, I conducted a brief evalaution of the students who attended the program. Utilizing the knowledge gained in my RMTD 406 course, I constructed the survey and disseminated the results among the WOE planning committee.
This event is an example of CEPS Program Objective (D): recognize education’s cultural dimensions and leverage cultural analyses in their work to improve educational experiences and institutions. Loyola is currently working to increase the university’s diversity and internationalization efforts under Plan 2020. Collaborating with other university offices and leveraging resources to run events such as the International Student Celebration and International Education Week can help raise the profile of international students on campus.
