Video Game Genre

We all play video games. Heck, that's the reason you're in this class. But have you ever taken the time to stop and think about what components are present in video games? Certain elements are necessary for a game to be classified as a video game. The Monopoly game in a box in your game room is a game, but it clearly is not a video game.  Beyond such an obvious factor, however, there are other elements in video games that differentiate one video game from another. That's why you like certain games more than others. It's determined by the role you, the player, play in the game.

Do you prefer the in your face adventure of one on one (one on one hundred) combat? Or, do you prefer the more cerebral role of coaching your favorite team to the Super Bowl? Whatever your preference, what we are talking about is game genre. Genre is a French word meaning type or kind. Genre can also refer to more specific types of, in our case, video games. Undoubtedly, you are aware of many of these genres. In this unit, we are going to delve more deeply into eleven of the major genre of video games analyzing, comparing and contrasting as we seek a better understanding of each one.
