Service Learning

During my service learning for the Math for Elementary Teachers course, I had the opportunity to work with children one on one and in groups. We went through problems relating to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I would often have them simply practice or compete in groups. They really seemed to enjoy competing with each other (if they felt confident in math). I at times needed to encourage students who struggled with it and felt they needed to complete their problems quickly, that there was no reason to rush and that everyone works at a different pace and has different strengths. It is important that students be reminded of this. I definitely learned how challenging it can be sometimes to help students when they have trouble with math. Sometimes, there is a concept that is difficult for them to grasp, and that is when I learned how important it would be for me to practice and learn different ways to teach the same concept. I don’t want students to feel how I did at times during school; that there is only one way to learn things, and if they don’t know it they are lost. It has become more important to me to want to be able to teach math as best as I possibly can. I had not had very much experience working with students in math before this semester, and it was a very worthwhile, informative experience for me.
