Language Acquisition is a complex, challenging issue for educators in today’s schools. At times, it appears that no solution exists to accommodate for language acquisition that will satisfy all parents, teachers, and students. Language Acquisition includes not only the process of learning a language, but it also refers to bilingual education and the many ways in which it can be accommodated. The different types of programs that will be addressed are, Structured Immersion, ESL pullout programs, Sink-or Swim, Transitional Bilingual Education, Two-way Bilingual Education, and Bilingual Maintenance Programs. There is much debate as to which one of these is most effective, but one thing is evident, children need time and patience given to them, because that is what learning a language takes. To conquer this complex problem, students need to be taught with visuals and projects and they need to be given time. Teachers who educate language learners with these methods that have their ESL (English as a Second Language) Endorsement, often claim that it works well and that the children continue to improve. While different programs, methods, and proposals will be discussed, Language Acquisition will continue to be a complex and challenging educational issue that needs strict attention and accommodations, and the dedication of teachers who understand its need for improvement.
