Winter Quarter, 2006, I conducted a case study in a 5th grade class at Roosevelt Elementary in San Gabriel Unified School District.
First, I worked with one student to assess and support her writing needs with two lessons on punctuation to curb her use of run-on sentences. It was both a rewarding and challenging experience working with her to assess and help her writing needs. Seeing the second lesson plan be more engaging than the first due to its more "hands-on" nature was quite revealing. In addition, I was not only humbled by errors I made in carrying out the lesson plans - miscalculations, timing misjudgments, skipping certain steps, etc., but made proud by my ability to make adjustments so that the lessons were still successful overall.
Next, I designed and implemented a whole class lesson on identifying character traits using text support - an area deemed in need of help by their classroom teacher. This was also a fulfilling and fun experience. The students loved the fact that the lesson was about something they could relate to - siblings. They also appreciated the fact that it was a true-life experience that I shared and wrote about. And they loved eating peaches at the end to celebrate the lesson's completion.
