The main idea of this lesson is to teach the children more about pennies and nickels. The mathematics taught are about currency and how to make certain combinations with their money. I picked this lesson because it teaches the children how to think in a real world situation. I believe they will enjoy “playing shop” while they learn about money. It is a simple activity, but it helps the children understand basic money groupings.
Playing Store
In this activity, children will cut and paste items to go with each price, then go shopping in another child's store to make purchases. This shows an understanding of pennies and nickels by figuring out correct combinations of coins.
What You Need:
-
Store Sheet (See Attachment Below)
-
Scissors
-
Glue
-
Magazines
-
Paper coins (pennies and nickels for every child)
-
Record Sheet (See Attachment Below)
What to Do:
-
Tell the children they are going to make their own store. Brainstorm ideas of items they might want to include (food, toys, jewelry, sports equipment, stuffed animals).
-
Distribute the Store Sheet, magazines, glue, and scissors. Tell the children to cut pictures of out of the magazines, of items they want in their store. Have them glue one picture in each of the eight boxes on their Store Sheet.
-
Have the children trade Store Sheets with another child and explain why they chose those items. Pass out the Record Sheet and paper coins. Tell the children to show what coins they would need to use to buy the items by pasting the paper coins on the Record Sheet.
