Multi-text Set Rationale

Context:

Using the curriculum from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for third grade Language Arts I constructed Multi-text set lessons. The lessons involved teaching the students about the civil rights time period. The lessons also focused on the stories and struggle of several different African Americans during that time period.

Impact:

Students could gain from this experience a basic knowledge of the civil rights time period. They would know about the struggle of the people during that time period through historical fiction, historical and biographies books. After this lesson they would also able to find and analyze resource relevance in accordance with the information being searched. Students are also able to work in cooperative groups and take roles within the groups.

Alignment:
I met NCDPI Standard 8 indicator 2 by demonstrating a variety of strategies in which students may analyze different parts of text in order to monitor their own reading comprehension.
I met NCDPI Standard 8 indicator 3 by guiding students through the reading of Goin Someplace Special and having them analyze different aspects of the story in order to promote critical thinking.
I met NCDPI Standard 8 indicator 6 by modeling standard English throughout the lesson in reading of the book and giving instructions.
I met NCDPI Standard 14 indicator 3 by introducing information about a controversial problem and guiding students through reading and research to produce a rational solution of their own.
