The role of ARCHES as a freshman learning program is well-established and showing signs of consolidation. For the AY 2016/17, the department will maintain that level of participation. | A Strategic Plan for MC, 2011-25 Phase II 2015-20: 2.1 Support student transition...link opens in new window

There is abundant evidence to suggest that FYS seminars are delivering positive results. This led to the curriculum change of increasing the number of required First Year Seminars from one to two per student. The standing request of the Liberal Arts Core Director is for the Department of Sociology to offer four FYS per year. Despite the unexpected loss of full-time sociology faculty members in the past two years, we have maintained our level of participation in offering two FYS sections per semester. We will continue to place full-time faculty into these courses and continue to fully participate in this important SoLA-led initiative. | A Strategic Plan for MC, 2011-25 Phase II 2015-20: 2.1.1 Further develop First Ye...link opens in new window

We seek to encourage more and more advanced methodology training for Sociology majors and minors in terms of quantitative analysis, spatial analysis, and qualitative analysis. To that end, we are engaging in a three-part strategy: (a) Emphasize existing methodological expertise and skills training in the Department of Sociology; (b) Expand faculty expertise into the field of Geography to maximize opportunities to integrate socio-spatial analysis (mapping, spatial modeling, etc...) and methodological training for majors and minors (see Goal 4); and (c) Support these initiatives with GIS mapping software currently unavailable in computer labs at Manhattan College. | A Strategic Plan for MC, 2011-25 Phase II 2015-20: 3.1.3 Continue to support inno...link opens in new window

(1) We are requesting the one-year continuation of our visiting professor line, currently staffed by Dennis Kalob, for the 2017-2018 academic year. This request has already been approved and will be invaluable in the Spring 2018 as we lose one full time faculty member to the Semester in Rome program. (2) We are hiring for two (2) tenure-track faculty positions in 2017-2018. Both are replacement hires and have been approved by the Provost and Executive Vice President. The first is a replacement Assistant Professor specializing in Criminology that will serve a long-standing concentration among Sociology majors/minors. The second is a replacement position for a faculty member on phased retirement and will be in the field of Geography. This shift in disciplinary specialization will serve our departmental strategy to expand into spatial analysis and offer courses and training in a field not currently available to Manhattan College students. | A Strategic Plan for MC, 2011-25 Phase II 2015-20: 2.5.2 Commit resources to recr...

| Goal 2: Maintain department service to School of Arts Core Curriculum by offering First Year Seminars. There is abundant evidence to suggest that FYS seminars are delivering positive results. This led to the curriculum change of increasing the number of required First Year Seminars from one to two per student. The standing request of the Liberal Arts Core Director is for the Department of Sociology to offer four FYS per year. Despite the unexpected loss of one full-time sociology faculty member in 2015, we have maintained our level of participation in offering two FYS sections per semester for 2015/16. For 2016/17, planned sabbaticals and the lack of FYS-trained faculty will force us to temporarily reduce our participation to one FYS per semester. At the same time, appropriate measures will be taken to restore our capacity for offering four FYS sections per year. |
