Goal 1: Sociology students should demonstrate a working knowledge (by defining, mastering the characteristics of, and being able to apply the concept to an example) of key concepts in sociology.
1.A Students will define the term "social problem".
1.B Students will recognize the characteristics of a "social problem".
1.C Students will describe the "Sociological Perspective".
1.D Students will describe sociological principles of human behavior.
1.E Students will demonstrate an understanding of two important theories and/or interpretations in one or more disciplines in the social sciences.
1.F Students will explain three specific ways in which the social sciences have contributed to our understanding of society in the contemporary or historical context.
1.G Students will evaluate and reach a conclusion about an argument or an explanation based on factual information provided in an assigned reading.
Goal 2: Sociology students should demonstrate a working knowledge of the major theories in sociology, the role of theory in building knowledge, and for a given social phenomena, construct a reasoned argument based on a theoretical perspective.
2.A Students will describe "functionalism".
2.B Students will describe "symbolic interactionism".
2.C Students will describe "conflict theory".
2.D Students will define the term "theory".
2.E Students will apply major theories (symbolic interactionism, functionalism, conflict) to examples.
2.F Students will identify theorists with their works.
2.G Students will apply appropriate theory to original research and discuss the strength of the application.
Goal 3: Sociology students should demonstrate a working knowledge of research methods in sociology; including recognizing how the scientific method is used; applying the proper statistical procedure to data; and interpreting the data appropriately.
3.A Students will identify characteristics of different research methods.
3.B Students will have an understanding of research ethics.
3.C Students will differentiate between independent and dependent variables.
3.D Students will have an understanding of statistics and how they are used.
3.E Students will apply the proper quantitative/qualitative data procedure to original empirical work.
3.F Students will interpret quantitative/qualitative data correctly.
Goal 4: Sociology students should demonstrate a working knowledge of cultural diversity including the significance of race, ethnicity, gender, class and sexuality both within the U.S. society and in the global world.
4.A Students will explain how a person's social status (e.g., race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, origin, and disability) shapes his/her perspective.
4.B Students will identify significant variations and commonalities among peoples of different cultural groups.
4.C Students will evaluate how a person's own cultural context influences how he or she perceives people of a different cultural context.
4.D Students will recognize how personal and systemic discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes impact lives and relationships.
Goal 5: Demonstrate a working knowledge of what it takes to transform from student to professional and how to effectively use that college career to successfully make the shift.
5.A: Student will develop a course of study to achieve his/her career goals.
5.B: Student will plan or compile a portfolio to showcase the skills he/she gained as a sociology major.
