TITLE:  NOT SO UNIVERSAL: RETAINING STUDENTS OF COLOR IN SCHOOL MUSIC ENSEMBLES

ABSTRACT:  Music is frequently lauded as the universal language, but the makeup of elective K-12 music courses shows that this is not necessarily the case. As music enrollment fluctuates, students of color are frequently underrepresented in music programming. This is particularly true at the high school level among choir, orchestra, and band courses. This study examines current literature describing the attrition gap and possible explanations. It goes on to analyze the results of a 2016 survey given to students at a diverse Midwestern suburban district. Through analysis of the responses, some explanations for the disproportionate attrition of students of color show significance and require deeper consideration.
