TITLE: PARENT EMPOWERMENT AND EARLY LITERACY SKILLS: AN ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT IN KINDERGARTEN
ABSTRACT: A kindergarten teacher conducted action research in her classroom with 11 students and families as participants. The teacher had two goals in mind while conducting this action research. The first was to determine if teacher-made and parent-implemented Literacy Kits would help parents feel empowered and/or confident in teaching their child literacy skills at home. The second other goal was to see if students would meet their personal goals in the target skill areas of name writing and letter identification. Results indicate that most students who used their Literacy Kit at home did meet their goal. Also resulting was that 100% of families expressed that they learned something new and felt confident using their Literacy Kit at home.
