Standard 14: For a candidate working as a teacher of record while completing a teacher preparation program to obtain an initial professional license, the unit must ensure:
(1) the candidate completes the requirements in Standard 11;
A candidate with a bachelor’s degree or higher working as a teacher or record with a Tier 2 license while completing any of UED’s approved programs for an initial Tier 3 professional license must complete the exact same requirements as any other candidate seeking initial licensure which exceed the minimum requirements stated in Standard 11. They must:
- complete a minimum of 120 field experience hours aligned to the scope and content of the licensure field sought prior to student teaching, including at least 60 hours in age/grade scopes of the license where they are not currently teaching (e.g., a high school teacher/candidate must still complete at least 60 hours in a middle grade content area classroom);
- have experience with students who differ in race, ethnicity, home language, and socioeconomic status; and
- have experience with students with a range of exceptionalities, including students on an individualized education plan;
- be teaching face-to-face in an assignment that is aligned to the scope and content of the licensure field sought;
- be observed by a cooperating teacher/colleague in the licensure area or licensed administrator for a minimum of five times and receive written, actionable feedback to ensure growth and attainment of standards
- be observed a minimum of five times by a university supervisor who provides written, actionable feedback to ensure growth and attainment of standards;
- participate in a minimum of three triad meetings with the cooperating teacher, the supervisor for clear and consistent communication; and
- receive a written evaluation by the university supervisor that addresses the candidate's ability to meet the standards in parts 8710.2000 to 8710.8080 and the required professional dispositions.
The UED Director of Field Experience also makes sure the teacher/candidate has sufficient support from the employing school for coaching and mentoring of the teacher/candidate in their classroom to provide the teacher/candidate with ongoing support, observations, and feedback as they are employed teaching for their student teaching experience. The University Supervisor is aware of this situation of the teacher/candidate not having a cooperating, mentor teacher in their classroom throughout each day so they are hired to give extra support to the teacher candidate.
