By: Ruth Galloway
Grade: K
Competency Goal:
1.01 Observe and describe the similarities and differences among animals including:
· Structure.
· Growth.
· Changes.
· Movement.
1.02 Observe how animals interact with their surroundings.
Accuracy
This book it is very colorful. It shows the colors that are in the sea. The underwater sea animals that are shown in this book are real life- like, the starfish, jellyfish, and crabs. It shows in this book how big fish eat smaller fish. The book shows how fish can dive, flip, and swim fast.
I would have the students get online with my guidance and we would look up things about jellyfish, starfish, crabs, and they would find out what limpets are. We would discuss the different under water animals. We would discuss how they can live and breathe under water. On the internet we would search and find all these things out as a class. After learning about the underwater animals I would have each student to draw a picture of their favorite animal they learned about. I would have them write one to three sentences about that animal depending on their ability.
Rationale for Organism text
Context: The book that I chose contains content about an organism. This book was about fish. It was a picture book for kindergarten level. This book can be used in the classroom to introduce a lesson about organisms. The teacher could use this book to teach about natural selection. With this book you could talk about how a fish got fins using natural selection. I also found the accuracy of this picture book to be good. I also found an activity that students could do using a website selected by the teacher. The student could also research things about the different sea creatures that are in the book.
Impact: This organism book will impact my students learning by teaching them about organisms and about natural selection in a subtle way. The students will learn about all different kinds of sea creatures for what they and other students research about the underwater sea creatures.
Alignment:
I met Standard 3, indicator 1 because using this book I can teach the basic concepts of basic life science with underwater sea creatures.
I met Standard 3, indicator 4 by using this book as I teach I can introduce natural selection to the students, which is a controversial issue.
