Level: Baccalaureate or Initial (Undergraduate) Licensure Level (October 2001)
Standard 2: Building Family and Community RelationshipsCandidates know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of children’s families and communities. They use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in their children’s development and learning.
Key Element: 2a. Knowing about and understanding family and community characteristics
Key Element: 2b. Supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships
Key Element: 2c. Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning

2A. Knowing about and understanding family and community characteristics.

I submit a family letter from an Integrated Thematic Unit which I implemented during 3rd quarter student teaching in January of 2012 as level IV artifact. I contend that this artifact demonstrates my ability to involve families in their children's learning and to promote family and school connections because it has the form that seeks family involvement and clearly states what the children will be learning during the unit.

2B. Supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships.

I submit a family letter from an Integrated Thematic Unit which I implemented during 3rd quarter student teaching in January of 2012 as level IV artifact. I contend that this artifact demonstrates my ability to support and involve families in their children's learning in a respectful manner. It also demonstrates my ability to promote family and school connections through family involvement in the classroom and it clearly states what the children will be learning during the unit which provides the family with a window into the classroom community.

2C. Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning.

To demonstrate the element contained within the standard of supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships, I submit a field trip plan which was written in the fall semester of 2009 for ECE 333. This plan builds upon the strengths of the small town community by highlighting the large impact that a small dairy farm can have on the local economy. I submit this as a level III artifact because I have not yet implemented a field trip within my professional experience, but I will one day!
