Executive Branch

It is important to understand the various organizations within Arizona's government.  This project lists the Executive Branch's departments and central postions, while explaining their main duties.

 

Executive Branch Organization

 

Governor – Oversees operations of other departments; Commander-in-Chief; Appoints public officials; Official Rep. of AZ; Makes sure laws are executed fairly

 

Secretary of State – Collects, complies, and safely keeps non-financial records of the state; Administration of the election process

 

Attorney General – Head of the Department of Law for AZ; Legal advisor to public officials; Defends the state and its agents in their legal duties brought against them; Responsible for crimes brought against AZ

 

State Treasurer – Keeps financial account of AZ’s revenues; Investment advisor; Reports regarding states accounts; Pays warrants issued by the division of finance

 

Superintendent of Public Instruction – Administrator of school funds, textbook selections, and teacher certification laws

 

State Mining Inspector – Conduct mine inspections

 

Corporation Commission – Regulate public service corporations within AZ

 

State Boards – Regulating education

  • State Board of Education – Prescribe courses of studies for common schools and high schools; Setting requirements for graduation
  • State Board of Directors for Community Colleges – Approve curriculum for colleges; Approve construction plans for colleges; set qualifications for teacher certification
  • <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> Board of Regents – Appoints presidents and employees of AZ universities; Established work and salary conditions; Set tuition and fees

Administrative Departments – Carry out the ongoing functions of government

  • Administration – Coordinates housekeeping functions of AZ bureaucracy
  • Agriculture – Supports and regulates farming, ranching and agribusiness while protecting consumers and natural resources
  • Banks - regulate and supervise the financial institutions
  • Commerce – Create and maintain a growing economy
  • Corrections – Operates <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> prison systems and administer parole and probation
  • Economic Security – Coordinates human service programs in AZ
  • Emergency and Military Affairs – promote safety and well-being for AZ
  • Environmental Quality - Protect and enhance public health and the environment in Arizona by administering programs to improve the health and ensure the quality of Arizona's air, land, and water resources meet healthful, regulatory standards.
  • Game and Fish – Establishes policy for the management, preservation, and harvest of wildlife
  • Gaming – Protect the public, ensure compliance with the gaming compacts, and regulate the gaming industry
  • Government Information Technology Agency – Improve information technology capabilities to efficiently add value and improve delivery of public services
  • Health Care Cost Containment System – Provide quality health care
  • Health Services – Administers programs for health and safety
  • Highway Safety - Ensure the safe and expeditious use of the highway transportation system for the public and to provide assistance to local and county law enforcement agencies
  • Insurance – Execute the state insurance laws in a manner that protects insurance consumers and encourages economic development
  • Juvenile Corrections – Promotion of public safety through managing AZ’s juvenile facilities and the development and provision of a continuum of services to juvenile offenders, including rehabilitation, treatment, and education.
  • Land – Manage State Trust lands and resources to enhance value and optimize economic return
  • Liquor Licenses and Control – Protect the health, safety and welfare of <st1:State w:st="on">Arizona</st1:State> citizens by licensing the liquor industry and assuring compliance with state liquor laws through enforcement, training and adjudication.
  • Lottery – Manages state lottery ticket sales
  • Parks - Deals with statewide recreational, cultural, and land conservation issues
  • Public Safety – Enforce state laws, deterring criminal activity, assuring highway and public safety, and providing vital scientific, technical, and operational support to other criminal justice agencies 
  • Real Estate – Protect the public interest through licensure and regulation of the real estate profession in AZ
  • Registrar of Contractors - Promote quality construction by <st1:State w:st="on">Arizona</st1:State> contractors through a licensing and regulatory system designed to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public
  • Revenue – Collects taxes; Verifies property classification; Supervises country assessors
  • Tourism – Expand the volume of travel activity and related expenditures through tourism promotion and development to enhance the economy
  • Transportation – Facilitate the movement of goods and people throughout the state
  • Water Resources – Secure long-term dependable water supplies for AZ
  • Weights and Measures – Protect the public and private sector in all commercial determinations of measurement
