Context:
These three math lessons were created for CI 4030 in Fall 2007. They were created under the advisement of Mrs. Betty Dishman. The three lessons were taught at Blue Ridge Elementary School in Mrs. Parsons's third grade class during Fall 2007 internship.
Impact:
Through the teaching of these lessons, the concepts of addition and subtraction are reviewed and reinforced. This specifically pertains to addition and subtraction word problems and gives students experience in both writing and solving addition and subtraction word problems. This is important because it gives students real life application for abstract mathematical operations.
Alignment:
Standard 2, Indicator 1--This indicator was met because the mathematical operations of addition and subtraction are reviewed and reinforced in the context of creating and solving word problems.
Standard 7, Indicator 1--This indicator was met because the North Carolina Standard Course of Study mathematics curriculum was utilized in the development of these three math lessons.
Standard 7, Indicator 3--This indicator was met because students' prior knowledge of addition and subtraction were needed and utilized in order for students to construct and solve their own addition and subtraction word problems.
Standard 7, Indicator 5--This indicator was met because these three lessons focused explicitly on problem solving. It also utilized multiple learning strategies, from direct instruction, to students constructing their own problems in a hands-on manner, to a problem solving race.
Standard 9, Indicator 1--This indicator was met because students solved addition and subtraction word problems by using problem solving strategies such as writing a number sentence and drawing a picture.
Standard 9, Indicator 3--This indicator was met because students were required to clearly communicate their mathematical thinking both in creating word problems for their peers to solve, and in communicating how they solved the word problems by showing their work.
Standard 9, Indicator 4--This indicator was met because through the creation and solving of the word problems, students were shown the connections between the abstract concepts of addition and subtraction and the real world.
Standard 9, Indicator 5--This indicator was met because students used words (in word problems), number sentences, and pictures to organize and represent the mathematical concepts of addition and subtraction.
