TITLE:  The Toxicity of it All: A Review of Literature about Microaggressions and Problematic Leadership Experienced by Educators of Color

ABSTRACT: The aim of this extensive literature review was to examine toxic work environments, primarily in educational organizations and its effects on educators of color. Microaggression and problematic leadership styles (e.g., passive leadership) help to contribute to these toxic work environments. This literature identifies three common types of microaggressions that educators of color experience: microinvalidations, microassaults, and microinsults. The extensive review of literature also provides best practice recommendations for educators of color, administrators and White colleagues in the field of education that can better support and retain educators of color in schools. Problematic leadership styles are also defined and further explored in contributing to a toxic work environment for educators of color.
